At CTT Correios Portugal they are pioneers in the incorporation of electric vehicles to their automotive fleet and in the permanent innovation of their products.
The postal operator CTT Correios Portugal is a pioneer in the incorporation of electric vehicles to its fleet of vehicles and in the permanent innovation of its product catalogue. In the first quarter of 2020, it added 9 new electric vehicles to its automotive fleet, which already has 321 alternative energy vehicles. This makes it the largest alternative fleet in all of Portugal in the transport and logistics sector.
They are currently testing a wide range of light electric vehicles, scooters and tricycles. The vehicles that are being tested are unique in Portugal as they are adapted to the needs of CTT Correios, in particular for the distribution of the last mile in order to have greater load capacity, greater safety and ergonomics in driving.
They will adapt to the current context and the massive growth of online orders and express mail, where the available volume of cargo has a daily operational need for this postal operator. These electric motorcycles have become strong competitors in terms of cost and autonomy, compared to combustion motorcycles and other models on the market.
The latest models added to the fleet have been the Rieju NUUK Gen Cargo two Renault Kangoo electric vans, the Nissan NV200 pilot test, among others. The results obtained are very positive in relation to the response to the needs of the workers of CTT Correios Portugal.
It is estimated that with the use of these electric vehicles, 17.5 tons of C02 could be saved per year, which would be the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 10 inhabitants. The objective benefits, in terms of polluting emissions and the carbon footprint, have been positive.
Electric vehicles do not emit polluting emissions during their use, and since CTT Correios obtains 100% renewable electricity, the carbon impact of these vehicles is zero, which contributes to improving the air quality of cities.
In 2020 they launched a pilot service called Green Deliveries with a large customer, allowing their customers to place orders throughout Lisbon with CTT electric vehicles. Also noteworthy are the new electric vehicle charging facilities at the CTT Correios Portugal facilities to meet internal charging needs.
